Leadership Training and Community Service

Leadership and Community Service are central to all we do at Langston.  A unique class has been created at Langston to teach the students about Leadership and help them explore ways to serve their community.  Sixth grade students are required to complete 10 hours of service each quarter and 7th and 8th graders are required to perform 15 hours of community service per quarter.  Projects and opportunities are discussed in class and students are then encouraged to participate in those activities that interest them the most.

To learn about Leadership, the students participate in the YMCA Youth In Government program, organize and lead class projects to raise money for Relay for Life, and explore current events and produce a video for the C-SPAN Student Cam program.  Langston students have won more awards in the Student Cam competition than any other school in the nation.  Students study books such as 6 Most Important Decisions You Will Make, 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, Beyond the Lemonade Stand. Students of Today, Leaders of Tomorrow

The mission of Langston Charter Middle School is to enrich and empower sixth, seventh and eighth graders with personal responsibility and a compassion for their community through single gender classes, innovative teacher, parent and community collaborative learning. Langston Charter Middle School expects parental involvement in their child's academic, emotional and social development.

Langston Charter Middle School is named after a courageous young girl, Laodicea "Dicey" Langston, who during the Revolutionary War risked her life on several occasions in our country's fight for freedom. Her selfless acts and willingness to be involved exemplify the character traits that must exist in people if their community is to be a place of quality. Dicey's acts of heroism took place near Greenville County. She later lived and raised her family in Travelers Rest, where a monument has been erected in her honor.

Building on the legacy of people like Dicey Langston we propose that Langston Charter Middle School exists to provide academic excellence for students while instilling the values of personal responsibility and accountability. The curriculum will incorporate service projects chosen by the students in order to enhance their academic learning as well as increase their sense of self-worth by making compassionate and real contributions to their community.

The middle school years present a unique set of challenges to students and to the adults who teach and parent them. These young adolescents are truly caught between two stages of development, and as a group they are widely scattered across the spectrum of maturity. Langston Charter Middle School will address these issues in an environment where students will experience innovative approaches to teaching and single gender classes. Parental involvement will go beyond just fund raising. Parents are expected and encouraged to be on campus and to actively participate in the educational process.

Our goal is to make education relevant to the present and future lives of our students. By studying leaders from the past, we are inspiring them to innovate, improve and have a positive impact on the community.

Socially responsible leaders understand the inherent interdependence of everyone in a community and that we are accountable to each other for our actions as well as our inactions. Our goal is to instill this awareness, a positive attitude, maximum effort, and honorable character as the attributes that will define our alumni.

School Clubs

All after school clubs at Langston are parent led. Leading a club is an excellent way for parents to be involved in their child’s life, share their knowledge and demonstrate leadership.  Clubs may meet anytime after school or on a weekend.  We currently have the following clubs organized or planned for this year.  For more information on a club contact the school office.

Students at Langston are expected to arrive to school each day prepared to focus on their education. As such, our students will wear uniforms to class and to designated school sponsored events. All students who attend Langston agree to abide by the designated school uniform dress code.

All prices are subject to price change. All prices include embroidered logo. In the event a student can not be fitted with an approved pant, Education Outfitters is authorized to substitute a comparable pant. All clothing must fit appropriately; not excessively loose nor too tight.

Shoes:
Student may wear their choice of shoes provided the shoe meets the following requirements:
Solid white or black
Lace or buckle
Covered heel, heel height may not exceed 1 ½ inches
No lights, dangling charms or distracting embellishments

Socks:
Socks must be worn at all times. Socks must be above the ankle. Only plain, solid white, khaki or navy socks are permitted. Girls may not wear hose.

Belt:
The school designated belt, available at Education Outfitters must be worn with any pant with belt loops. Shirts must be worn tucked-in.
